Local History Book Club In-Person

We are lucky to live in an area so steeped in history! This book club will celebrate that history by exploring the wealth of books about the South Shore. We will meet quarterly on the first Tuesday evening of February, May, August and November at 6:30 pm in the Board Room to discuss a book selection. Books will be available to check out at the circulation desk of the Main Library four weeks prior to the meeting date.

The book selection for May 3 is the historical fiction novel, Flight of the Sparrow : a novel of early America, by Amy Belding Brown.

Based on the compelling true narrative of Mary Rowlandson, Flight of the Sparrow is an evocative tale that transports the reader to a little-known time in early America and explores the real meaning of freedom, faith, and acceptance.

Flight of the Sparrow is based on the true story of 17th century Mary Rowlandson, who survived a Nipmoc attack on the village of Lancaster, MA and was subsequently taken prisoner along with two of her children. After about three months, Rowlandson was ransomed back to the English. She then went on to write a tale of her account, now known as A Narrative of the Captivity, Sufferings and Removes of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson. You can use this link to read a digital copy of her book, which some consider to be the first American bestseller.
